Yes, there is such a thing

An open letter to The Format
Re: Your newest album "Dog Problems"

Dear The Format,

You are listening to entirely too much Queen.

Sincerely,
Timmy Tapeworm

...nope, never heard of them. As a result, you've become cooler or something? I'm not quite sure how this works. Maybe now I'm supposed to reference a band that sounds made up to impress you?

You've never heard of Queen, Jacob? Come on, they're pretty well known. I mean, they're no Goldfinger circa 1997, but I'm sure you've at least heard "Bohemian Rhapsody." Maybe "We Are the Champions"?

I totally disagree. Nobody can ever listen to too much queen. Just ask Muse... or listen to their new album when it comes out.

Also, listen to this: http://www.q-unit.net/

please.

tim...don't forget the classic "antoher one bites the dust." as for too much queen...i don't know. especialyl when it comes to "bohemian rhapsody."

Other than the first 5 seconds of "Time Bomb" I'm not really hearing it...

In other mostly related news, the CD is completely awesome, but the case is very vulnerable.

Is there a problem with Queen, Tim?

Because I like Queen well enough. And I'm dating a bit of a Queen fanatic. And I'd hate for our friendship to be ruined because you can't accept Freddy Mercury into your heart.

...

I'm just kidding. This band is probably too emo for me anyway.

Whoa whoa whoa! People, please. Let's get one thing straight - I love Queen. They were an amazing band and Freddie Mercury was one of the all-time great frontmen. Yes Susan, there is a Queen song on Guitar Hero ("Killer Queen") and it is one of my favorite songs to play.

I'm just saying, when you're writing an album, maybe you shouldn't be listening to so much of them. There are shades of Queen all over the album and Corie, I think you're crazy for not hearing it. The instrumentation, the arrangements, the soaring group vocals...I hear it everywhere. For heaven's sake, the title track is essentially "Killer Queen" with a pared-down "Bohemian" structure, only if Freddie Mercury were from Arizona.

Don't get me wrong - it's a great album. Not as instantly catchy as "Interventions and Lullabies" - took a couple listens for me to really latch onto it. It just seems that the only thing they've been doing for the past two years is sitting around listening to "Classic Queen" and getting ambitious.

Wow. Just... wow. The pretention in that lone sentence is enough to power fifty scene kids for a year. Where did you come up with that particular assessment? Were you just digging around in Jeph Jacques's trash can for lines you could use? And if so was he writing for someone he was about to mercilessly make fun of? And if so, was even that character less nerdy than you?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Somebody else already thought they were Queen-ish in their first album.

I still don't really see the connection enough to warrant your open letter to them... but then again, I know nothing about chord progressions.
I just listen.

so the vocal harmonies are a little "queenish"...the album is still better than Interventions and Lullabies. Much more complex. And all of the instrumentation...the horns and woodwinds mostly...doesn't sound like Queen to me. I love it! They are playing at the Metro with Anathallo on the 18th...hopefully I will be there with lots of friends. Perhaps I'll actually see you this time...

p.s. of course jacob has freakin' heard Queen...he WAS a member of JCHS theater for four whole years. and I can say the same for you. I, on the other hand, was smart and quit. But I understand...it must be hard to be as awesome as Mattie Schell (that's me).
